Most of our tribal rugs like this extremely unique Bordjalo Kazak were woven in the late 19th century along the western coast of the Caspian Sea—an area bordered by the Black Sea and Turkey to the west and Russia to the north—reflects a rich weaving heritage. Woven with hand-spun wool and naturally derived vegetable dyes, this region was historically celebrated as a center for producing exceptional tribal rugs before the Soviet period. The motives of this rug are taken from a much earlier kilim weaving, (flat woven rug). Intricately adorned with spiritual motifs, the patterns draw inspiration from the early shamanistic traditions practiced by the Turkic peoples of Central Asia, embedding deep cultural and historical significance into each thread. This combination of artistry and symbolism not only highlights the weaver’s technical mastery but also offers a tangible connection to the region’s ancient spiritual heritage. This rug was distinctly woven as a dowry piece and is often referred to as a "medicine rug" because of its symbolic elements. The central motif represents the earth mother, while the narrow borders feature scorpion tails, symbolizing dignity and protection. Additionally, the design incorporates shamanistic symbols that embody the concept of rebirth.
All our carpets and kilims are one-of-a-kind, hand-knotted or hand-woven with 100% hand spun wool pile. Color variation is called "Abrash" which is due to none-bleached wool's absorption of the dyes used or the carpet or kilim maybe woven with 2 different batches of dyed wool, which was available at the time.
If you like uniformity-a soulless item-these are not for you. These are the reminiscent of a disappearing art.
