This exquisite runner, likely woven in the early 20th century or slightly earlier, originates from the mountainous region of southern Azerbaijan. Crafted entirely from hand-spun wool and dyed with natural vegetable dyes, it features boteh motifs symbolizing the bond between mother and daughter, essential to humanity’s continuity. This piece was intended for significant occasions, such as weddings or births. The weaver employed high-quality spring-sheared wool, prized for its cleanliness and organic oils that give the fibers a natural sheen. Despite the typically coarse and thick mountain wool, the use of the Turkish double knot technique ensures a low, flexible pile, enhancing both durability and comfort.
All our carpets and kilims are one-of-a-kind, hand-knotted or hand-woven with 100% hand spun wool pile. Color variation is called "Abrash" which is due to none-bleached wool's absorption of the dyes used or the carpet or kilim maybe woven with 2 different batches of dyed wool, which was available at the time.
If you like uniformity-a soulless item-these are not for you. These are the reminiscent of a disappearing art.
