Sivas Sharkishla kilims are highly prized for their distinctive colors, typically featuring a unique madder root background, along with a soft texture, clear motif definition, and a rustic aesthetic that complements various decor styles. These kilims are exceptionally rare, as few have survived and they were never widely produced. Originating from Sivas, a region known for early Ottoman homes, these kilims were typically large—similar to Kumkapi and Ushak carpets—designed to suit the spacious interiors of these residences, unlike smaller village rugs.
These kilims & carpets were mostly woven for specific reasons, such as dowry, gift, commission based by someone, or for the decoration of one’s home. That is why they are not regular sizes like today’s rugs in perfect sizes or colors.
These are very rare finds, because the art of weaving in these original areas is disappearing very fast due to more opportunities in big cities. Weaving was a pastime activity in most of rural areas of greater Mesopotamia to Central Asia and the source of income as well.
They have been all checked for damages, if needed, restored, such as the fringes and edges by Turkish carpet restoration experts in Turkey.
