This stunning piece is a replica of an antique Karabagh kilim, transformed into a pile rug using hand-spun wool and natural vegetable dyes in Malatya, Turkey, by Karavan. It’s crafted entirely from fine Black Mountain wool— a distinguished East Anatolian wool—and dyed exclusively with vegetable-based colors. To faithfully represent the original, the rug showcases abrash, or unintentional color variations, across its surface. When examined closely, the two halves reveal subtle differences for this reason. Historically, needlepoint versions of this design existed with alternate colors, notably beige.
Each of our carpets and kilims is unique, hand-knotted or hand-woven using 100% hand-spun wool. The color variations, known as "Abrash," result from the natural dye absorption of undyed wool or the use of two different dye lots available at the time of weaving. For those seeking uniformity, these pieces may not suit your taste. Instead, they stand as authentic examples of a vanishing craftsmanship tradition.
