While the concept of hand-shaped chairs existed in previous cultures, the modern version originated in Mexico with surrealist artist Pedro Friedeberg. Born in 1936, Friedeberg and his family fled Italy for Mexico during World War II. This particular chair was transported from Southeast Asia to Turkey, and consists of two pieces expertly joined together in the mid-20th century. It was originally used for meditation, and is also known as the "Buddha's hand" in that region. With its timeless and unique design, this chair is truly one-of-a-kind.
