Sofra Kilim

Most of our tribal rugs like this Sofra kilim, (originally it was woven as underlays for village floor tables), were  woven in either Turkiye or Central Asia where the Turkic people lived.  The motives are very clear against their backgrounds. This combination of artistry and symbolism not only highlights the weaver’s technical mastery but also offers a tangible connection to the region’s ancient spiritual heritage.  

All our carpets and kilims are one-of-a-kind, hand-knotted or hand-woven with 100% hand spun wool pile.  Color variation is called "Abrash" which is due to none-bleached wool's absorption of the dyes used or the carpet or kilim maybe woven with 2 different batches of dyed wool, which was available at the time. Although this kilim looks like SW weaving here in Americas, it was actually originated in Western Caucasus.

If you like uniformity-a soulless item-these are not for you.  These are the reminiscent of a disappearing art.

These kilims & carpets were mostly woven for specific reasons, such as dowry, gift, commission based by someone, or for the decoration of one’s home.  That is why they are not regular sizes like today’s rugs in perfect sizes or colors.

These are very rare finds, because the art of weaving in these original areas is disappearing very fast due to more opportunities in big cities.  Weaving was a pastime activity in most of rural areas of greater Mesopotamia to Central Asia and the source of income as well.

They have been all checked for damages, if needed, restored, such as the fringes and edges by Turkish carpet restoration experts in Turkey.
