The Eshme Ottoman is upholstered with carefully preserved fragments of an Eshme kilim originating from southwestern Turkey, near the Pamukkale region. This kilim is distinguished by its symbolic representation of the Earth Mother, reflecting the deep cultural meanings embedded in the weaving traditions of the area. As a truly unique, one-of-a-kind piece of furniture, this ottoman connects functional design with rich heritage. Historically, these kilims were woven to cover floors or divans—raised benches used for sitting or sleeping—serving both practical and decorative purposes. Over time, sections of the kilim that experienced wear and damage have been thoughtfully repurposed, with intact fragments reused as pillowcases or upholstery, as exemplified in this ottoman. Crafted from 100% hand-spun mountain wool and handwoven in the early 20th century, it embodies the enduring skills of Anatolian artisans and preserves the cultural legacy of the region while adding distinctive character and history to your living space.
