Balikkesir kilims are a type of handwoven rug originating from the Balikkesir region in northwest Anatolia, Turkey. These rugs are deeply connected to the nomadic customs of the Yüncü people. The first documented Turkish kilim can be traced back to Neolithic pottery from Çatalhöyük, dating back to 7000 BC. Originally used as blankets, saddle blankets, seat mats, or wall decorations, kilims with varied purposes, such as this one, were often created with striped patterns, known as "water channel" or "essence of life."
