This vintage Denizli kilim jijim, crafted from hand-spun wool and natural dyes, was mainly designed as a sturdy floor covering. Its supple texture also made it useful for shielding livestock from harsh weather conditions. As a nomadic textile, it consists of two separate panels woven on portable looms, likely while the weavers tended sheep on the high steppes of the Denizli region. The design is rich in symbolism, created to protect the family and their belongings from harm and negative forces.
These kilim & carpets were mostly woven for specific reasons, such as dowry, gift, commission based by someone, or for the decoration of one’s home. That is why they are not regular sizes like today’s rugs in perfect sizes or colors.
These are very rare finds, because the art of weaving in these original areas is disappearing very fast due to more opportunities in big cities. Weaving was a pastime activity in most of rural areas of greater Mesopotamia to Central Asia and the source of income as well.
